Transforming new site into a high-performance MOT Station

Project Overview

Boston was selected to design and install a fully integrated Class 1–7 MOT bay at Dengie MOT, a brand-new workshop and MOT Station in Burnham-on-Crouch.

The installation included:

• Two Boston Class 7 four-post MOT lifts:
  • 6.5T lift with 7m platforms
  • 5T lift with 5.6m platforms
• D712W Class 7 ATL brake tester with integrated weighing system and adapter plates for testing motorcycles
• Boston’s fully integrated connected MOT testing equipment for streamlined workflow

The Challenge

The site presented several technical challenges that necessitated careful planning and precision installation.

The most significant was an unusual roof profile, which made positioning the lifts particularly complex. The left-hand lift, in particular, required detailed calculations to ensure sufficient headroom, taking into account both the length and the platform depth due to the lift being surface-mounted. Both lifts also needed to be precisely aimed toward the entrance to ensure safe and practical vehicle access while maintaining compliance.

Furthermore, due to the doorway width being close to the minimum requirement, the brake tester standing area had to be positioned fully within the building.

This combination of structural constraints made the layout especially challenging and required close collaboration between our design and installation team.

The Solution

We designed a bespoke layout to maximise the available space while ensuring full functionality and compliance.

Through precise positioning and expert installation:

• Both lifts were installed to meet DVSA headroom requirements
• The brake tester was positioned to meet regulations and maintain efficient workflow
• The overall bay layout allows smooth vehicle movement and safe operation

The result is a highly efficient, fully compliant MOT bay that makes the most of the site.

Supporting British Automotive Engineering

We were delighted to recently welcome Caterham Cars to Boston, where their engineering team carried out brake testing in our dedicated demonstration bay after hearing positive feedback about our MOT test equipment.

During their initial visit, James and Simon from the Caterham team completed a comprehensive series of roller brake tests, using our D712 Class 4 & 7 brake tester, and some further decelerometer tests using our wireless DC-7500. Working closely with our Product Development Manager, Andy, the session focused on reviewing test results, comparing methodologies and gaining a detailed understanding of the how the equipment is used for periodic vehicle testing.

Having gained valuable insight during their first visit, Caterham returned on a second occasion, this time bringing a different vehicle. This follow-up session allowed for additional comparison and evaluation of brake performance characteristics across varying vehicle setups.  

During both visits, the focus remained on practical assessment, data interpretation and understanding how different brake testing methods can support performance engineering. The opportunity to test multiple vehicles also reinforced the importance of accurate, repeatable brake testing in both development and MOT environments.

ARTICLE UPDATED TO REFLECT REVISED GUIDANCE ISSUED ON 13th NOVEMBER 2025

On 23rd October 2025, the DVSA updated the ‘MOT Testing Guide’ regarding equipment maintenance, calibration, and record-keeping for ATL and OPTL wheel and steering play detectors (shaker plates).

The updated guidance covered maintenance schedules and who is approved to work on the equipment.

Since then, the DVSA has further updated and clarified this guidance. As of 13th November 2025, the MOT Testing Guide now reflects clearer information on who is allowed to maintain this equipment.

Maintenance Periods

All equipment must be maintained in good working order at all times.

In the case of ATL or one person test lanes (OPTL), maintenance periods for steering and suspension play detectors is a minimum of every:

• 6 months for pneumatic equipment
• 12 months for hydraulic equipment

Who Can Carry Out The Work?

As of 13th November 2025, the MOT Testing Guide now states that maintenance can be completed by:

• The manufacturer
• The manufacturer’s agent
• A suitably qualified maintenance engineer
• A calibration specialist

What Paperwork is Required?

After each visit, the engineer must provide:

• A maintenance report detailing any remedial work
• A signed and dated declaration confirming the equipment is in good working order

This updated wording provides clearer guidance and confirms a wider range of qualified garage equipment professionals can carry out maintenance.

What Does This Mean for Your MOT Station?

It remains essential that your steering and suspension play detectors are serviced at the correct intervals by a suitably qualified garage equipment engineer and that the correct documentation is provided after every maintenance visit.

Background

Witham Motor Company approached us following a recommendation from one of our long-standing customers, Braintree Motor Company. They had recently invested in emissions equipment from another supplier but were dissatisfied with its performance and reliability. Their priority was finding a more effective solution, and importantly a handheld oil/temp RPM measurement tool (not provided with their existing kit) that would record results directly in the software.

Our Solution

The Witham team visited Boston for a live demonstration of our emissions testing system. During their visit they also explored our MOT showroom and were impressed by our four-post MOT lift, particularly Boston’s unique innovations such as the play detector wireless torch control, Any-Post Control (APC) and LED Lighting Kit.

At the time, their existing MOT lift was approaching end of life. They wanted to upgrade but only had a very tight installation window during a quieter testing period. Despite the added challenge of required groundwork to lengthen their recess, we worked closely with their team to ensure installation was completed on time.

Implementation

• From initial enquiry to installation: 3 weeks
• Equipment installed: B452-560 MOT Four-Post Lift with 2.8T Air Jacking Beam, Wireless Play Detector Torch Control, Any Post Control (APC), EM10 Emissions Package including handheld oil/temp RPM device, and EOBD device.
• Unique challenges: Tight installation timeframe.
• Outcome: Smooth installation delivered within deadline.

The air jacking beam is a game changer for us, especially with the fitting kit which keeps everything neat and tidy. The any-post control is another huge benefit, both save us so much time and effort. The lift is solid and looks great. As for the emissions, it’s a much quicker test than with our previous supplier, and we haven’t had a vehicle the EOBD couldn’t connect to yet — it’s far more reliable.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has today released Special Notice 04-25, confirming that new requirements will be introduced for jacking equipment in Class 4 MOT test bays from 1 April 2026.

What’s Changing?

From 1st April 2026, any MOT centres applying to open a new site or make changes to an existing site will need to ensure their jacking equipment meets the following updated specifications:

• Minimum safe working load (SWL): 2 tonnes
• Distance of at least 1,700mm between the centre of the lifting pads

These updates are designed to ensure MOT stations can safely accommodate newer, heavier vehicles, including hybrids and EVs, which are increasingly common on UK roads.

Who Do the Changes Affect?

The new requirements apply to MOT centres that, from April 2026 onwards, are:

• Opening a new centre
• Changing ownership (where the site is transferred to a different authorised examiner (AE) with a different AE number)
• Restarting MOT testing after a period of no testing (regardless of how long)
• Adding another test lane
• Voluntarily upgrading or replacing damaged jacking equipment

The changes will not affect MOT centres that are: only changing their existing AE (keeping the same AE number), submitting their application to the DVSA prior to 1st April 2026, or have approved Class 4 test bays and are not making any changes.

Why the Change?

The DVSA confirmed that the update is necessary because the current jacking specifications cannot always accommodate the increased weight and design of electric and hybrid vehicles. By raising the minimum SWL and pad spacing, the updated requirements will ensure MOT testing remains safe and effective for all vehicle types.

What do MOT Stations Need to Do?

If you already have approved Class 4 test bays and are not making any changes, you don’t need to take action. However, if you plan to upgrade, expand, or change ownership after 1st April 2026, you must ensure your jacking equipment complies with these new specifications.

The EOBD-400 is our new Bluetooth 5 (LE) robust EOBD diagnostic scanner for the measurement of RPM and Oil Temperature when carrying out official UK MOT emissions testing.

Compatible with our emissions testers (AGS200 Gas Analyser and OPA100 Smoke Meter), the EOBD-400 connects automatically when inserted into the vehicle and transfers the required data seamlessly for either type of test.

The device is also compatible with Android, iOS and Windows Operating Systems, and can easily be used as a sophisticated diagnostic scan tool and real-time performance monitor using a variety of 3rd party applications. What is the EOBD-400?

The EOBD-400 is our new Oil Temperature, RPM measurement and Diagnostic Interface. The device is an integral part of Boston emissions testing equipment and replaces the earlier model EOBD-300.

What does this mean in terms of cost?

Unlike our previous model, the new EOBD-400 communicates directly with the PC avoiding the requirement for the handheld MGT300EVO and its associated RPM cables and oil temperature probe.

This represents a considerable saving which we are pleased to pass onto customers buying new emissions equipment or looking to purchase an EOBD device (latest SW900iV software required).

What are the benefits of the new EOBD?

The EOBD400 is a far superior device and has been developed to address the shortfalls of other models in the market. Its main features are:

Company and product videos are something we’ve wanted to create for quite a while here at Boston Garage Equipment.

However, it’s only since we moved into our new premises near Maldon, Essex that we’ve had the space to install equipment and produce what we had in mind.

Boston Garage Equipment is sponsoring father and son team Andy and Jacob Fells, who are competing in the 2023 EnduroKA championship alongside third driver and teammate Mark Roberts.  

EuduroKA is an endurance race championship originally launched in 2019 with teams all competing in Mk1 1300cc Ford KAs. According to the official EnduroKA website, “the series is designed to exhibit driving excellence and car control in the absence of vehicle and technical development.”

The team named “Boston Racing”, is led by Andy Fells, Program Manager at Ford Motor Company in Essex. Prior to the first race on Sunday 16^th April, we spoke to Andy to find out more about the championship and the team’s motivations…

What motivated you and Jacob to race together?

I have loved racing and building cars for as long as I can remember. I started racing in 2000 with a modified Mk2 Fiesta XR2 in the 750MC Hot Hatch championship. After winning the championship in 2004 I moved to the MG X-Power Trophy in an ex-Factory prepared MGZR. In the years that followed, racing became more and more sporadic as family life took over. Now that the kids are grown up the time is right to get back into racing with the added enjoyment of sharing it with them.

My eldest son Jacob has always wanted to race from a very young age. From around 7 years old he had off-road buggies and motor bikes. At 14 he started racing in a Go-Karting Championship (Brentwood Karting) with a number of wins including an All Stars Championship. Now that he’s 18 he’ll get to experience racing cars for the very first time.

Why did you choose the EnduroKA Series?   

The championship is very accessible with cars readily available; it’s also an extremely cost-effective way of achieving a significant amount of time in the driving seat which will enable Jacob to hone his racing skills. In comparison, most of my earlier racing was in sprint races of around 15-20 minutes which means he’ll gain as much seat time in one race as I did in 5 rounds!

Tell us more about teammate Mark Roberts...

Mark has done many years of racing and was keen to get back into it when offered the chance. He originally started racing in 1995 in the Slick 50 Road Saloons Championship before moving onto the MG X-Power Trophy in an MGF Cup car, winning the championship in 2004.

He’s also competed in various endurance races such as the Nürburgring and Mondello Park 24 hour races. More recently he raced a replica of the 1980’s Group 1 Datapost Fiesta and was lucky enough to compete in the Gerry Marshall Trophy at the Goodwood Members meeting.

What preparation has gone into the car for the race?

First we purchased a 2008 38k Ford KA from ebay. The number of modifications allowed are limited with the bulk of the installation hardware (suspension, bushes, roll cage etc.) being purchased as a kit from Burton Power Products - one of the championship sponsors.

Jacob and I stripped the car down to a shell and then started work. Most of the time was spent preparing the body shell, carrying out rust repairs and fitting the roll cage. It was a great opportunity to further my welding skills and allow Jacob to learn. The engine and gear box were in great shape so only a freshening was required.

After many hours of rebuild, a partial respray, and application of our Boston decal wrap we were ready to go! We tested the car at Brands Hatch on 3^rd April with great results. The car behaved perfectly and Jacob was competitive straight out of the box.

My times were competitive but Jacob was quicker – something I blame on my extra 40kg of body ballast and the increased trepidation that inevitably comes with age… Oh to be 18 and fearless again!

When and where are you racing?

There are 6 races in the 2023 series. The first one takes place at Silverstone National on Sunday 16^th April and the last one is at Brands Hatch Indy in October. The full race listings can be found on the EnduroKA Kalendar page.

The online petition which closes on 23^rd July 2023, aims to stop the government from extending the period of a vehicle’s first MOT from 3 years to 4 years.

It has been created in response to the Government’s consultation on changes to the MOT test which could also see intervals between MOT Tests extended.

Signing the petition goes beyond just supporting our industry, it is a matter of safety that should concern everyone.

Without a significant response from the public it is likely that the government may succeed in introducing 4-1-1 and potentially even 4-2-2 testing.

At current time of writing (12^th April 2023), the petition does not yet have the 10,000 signatures required for a government response. In reality, a bare minimum of at least 100,000 signatures, which means the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament, is likely to be required to forestall this change.

Safety Impact Highlighted by the Government

Data provided by the DVSA in their own consultation (see Safety Impacts) indeed highlights the dangerous implications of extending the first MOT to 4 years:

…for most of the vehicles in scope, it can be observed that the initial failure rate of vehicles increases with the vehicle age. For Class 4 vehicles in 2019, this rose from 14% for 3-year-old vehicles to 16% for 4-year-old vehicles. It is anticipated that an increase in the number of vehicles operating with vehicle defects for a longer duration could lead to an increase in the number of vehicle defect-related collisions. In 2019, there were some 1,455 casualties in collisions where a vehicle defect contributory factor was listed for the vehicles identified in scope of this proposal, 20 of which were fatal and 333 and 1,102 were either serious or slight respectively.

Government’s Predicted Increase in Casualties

The government estimates an annual increase of 16 – 65 casualties if the initial MOT period is extended by 1 year. Of this number they predict 1 fatality and 4-16 serious casualties. It is hard to see how this can be an acceptable outcome for anyone.

What Does the Petition Say?

In response, the online petition says:

We believe this will be dangerous, expensive, damaging and unnecessary. 1,759 casualties were caused by vehicle defects in 2021. Keep our roads safe by keeping the MOT at 3-1-1.

…any reduction to the MOT frequency will be:

Dangerous: Increased casualties and deaths caused by vehicle defects

Expensive: Increased vehicle repair, maintenance & insurance costs

Damaging: Increased pollution & congestion levels

Unnecessary: There is little evidence to suggest motorists want to change MOT frequency

The government has looked at such measures in the past but has abandoned them each time after reasoned arguments from both the industry and the public.

The petition is supported by many industry bodies including the Independent Garage Association (IGA), the Garage Equipment Association (GEA) of which Boston is a member, the Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA), the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) and the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA).

What Can You Do to Prevent This Change?

If you believe that extending the period of a vehicle’s first MOT will have negative consequences, then we not only urge you to sign the petition but ask that you speak to friends and family too. Ultimately the greater the number of signatures, the more chance we have of keeping our roads safe.

The latest ‘Matters of Testing’ blog provides an overview of the DVSA’s plans to introduce Connected Cameras in Vehicle Testing Stations.

Following the launch of Connected MOT Equipment which, since October 2019, has seen the introduction of connected brake testers, emissions equipment (gas analysers & diesel smoke meters) and decelerometers, the DVSA now appears to be focusing on Connected Cameras.

According to the blog post published on March 29^th 2023, the DVSA have already completed an initial trial in a certain number of MOT Stations with testers using a phone or tablet device to upload images to the MTS.  

Talking about the benefits of Connected Cameras, the DVSA states, “This will help reduce record keeping errors as [testers] won’t need to enter the registration plate manually. This should also help save time during the test.”

When are Connected Cameras likely to be introduced?

There is no introduction date planned so far as the DVSA’s next step is to carry out a second trial. However, should this be successful they have indicated they are planning to introduce cameras as the primary way in which all MOT Stations will register a vehicle for an MOT.

This would be a departure from current rules which stipulate that Connected Equipment is only required under certain circumstances: when setting up a new Testing Station, when there is a change of entity, when buying new equipment or when replacing old equipment that now needs to be connected.

Consequently the DVSA has said, “We’ll let [MOT Stations] know how the second trial goes and, if we decide to adopt connected cameras for all MOTs, we’ll give [you] plenty of warning of any changes.”

What’s happening with Connected Headlamp Aim Testers?

For the last couple of years the DVSA has also been promising to introduce Connected Headlamp Aim Testers. This is still pending final specifications from the DVSA and there has been no recent update on this topic.

How is Boston keeping ahead of Connected Equipment regulations?

At Boston, our aim is to continue to keep ahead of changes in the industry and ensure we future-proof equipment for our customers.

As we design and develop not only our products but our MOT Control Software, we have the capability to react quickly to market developments. In addition to our complete range of existing Connected Equipment, we have already been working in the background to develop Connected Headlamp Aim Testers and Connected Cameras and integrate these into our software. This means that we’ll be ready with a fully integrated solution that will operate all items of Connected MOT equipment as soon as the DVSA announces launch dates.

The results of the consultation could lead to irrevocable changes to the MOT with far-reaching consequences impacting road safety, the environment and the livelihoods of those in the industry from MOT stations to service & repair workshops and vehicle manufacturers. 

With arguably the potential for the biggest shake up to the MOT since it was introduced in the 1960s, it is important that the DVSA hears from as many concerned parties as possible before the consultation deadline at midnight on Tuesday 28^th February 2023.
UPDATE: The deadline has been extended to Wednesday 22nd March 2023.

How is the MOT Consultation Structured?

The survey is broken down into two sections. The first high-level section only takes around 5 minutes to complete. The second section goes into more depth and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. It is up to each individual or business to decide the extent to which they wish to respond.

It's possible to save your replies at any point during the survey and continue at another time, just make sure you’ve entered a valid email address at the beginning to receive a link to your saved content. At the end of the survey, it is also possible to save or print your response.

What Changes to the MOT are Being Considered?

The big one is obviously the much-publicised proposal to move from a 3-1-1 MOT Testing schedule to a 4-2-2 model. This has been discussed in the past but currently has government momentum behind it hence the consultation.

However, the scope of the survey goes beyond just the timings of the MOT with many other items in focus that will be of interest to the industry such as:

• Particulate Number (PN) testing for diesel vehicles
• Content of the MOT Test
• Potential improvements to the MOT Test
• Training & Assessment
• DVSA Enforcement
• MOT Testing Fees
• Longer term considerations such as changes required due to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) & Self Driving Vehicles

What Happens Next?

A summary of responses, including the next steps, will be published within 3 months of the consultation closing date.

The DVSA has announced upcoming changes to how and when calibrations must be carried out for roller brake testers, headlamp aim testers and decelerometers.

The new rules will apply to all Vehicle Testing Stations from 1^st April 2023.

Changes to Brake Tester and Headlamp Aim Tester Calibrations

From 1^st April 2023 the DVSA will no longer allow MOT Stations to calibrate their own brake testers or headlamp testers. According to the new regulations, calibration of these items must only be carried out by:

• the original manufacturer
• a company that has taken over responsibility for equipment support from the manufacturer
• an MOT equipment calibration specialist

The DVSA further states that MOT Stations must “satisfy themselves of the technical competence and viability of the company concerned and be able to demonstrate this to DVSA upon request.”

Changes to Decelerometer Calibrations

Under current regulations Decelerometers (sometimes referred to as Tapley Meters) are calibrated every 24 months. From 1^st April 2023 this will become an annual requirement with calibration intervals not to exceed 12 months.

Decelerometer calibration certificates issued before 1^st April 2023 will remain valid until they expire, after this the equipment must be calibrated annually.

When will the DVSA update their documentation?

The MOT special notice 01-23 which includes these changes is now available on the government's website. The DVSA will also be updating the MOT testing guide and MOT inspection manuals (all classes) to include these modifications on 6th February 2023.

MOT Connected Equipment regulations apply to Gas Analysers & Smoke Meters from 1 May 2021

Special Notice 02-21 announced the extension of the DVSA's Connected MOT Equipment rollout to include emissions equipment from the beginning of May.

The rules apply to companies testing or planning to test Classes 4, 5, and 7 under the following circumstances:

• Opening a new MOT centre
• Reopening a closed MOT centre
• Changing ownership
• Replacing emissions testing equipment

This means that anyone starting a new MOT Station or taking over an existing business will now require connected emissions in addition to a connected roller brake tester and a connected decelerometer. 

The last item on the list for a fully connected test lane is a digital headlamp aim tester. This is likely to be a little way off still as the DVSA has yet to provide the final product specifications to manufacturers.

Boston is excited to announce that we are relocating from our Rainham premises in East London to new, much larger premises near Maldon in Essex.

Our new address is as follows:

Boston Garage Equipment, Beckingham Business Park, Tolleshunt Major, Essex, CM9 8LZ.

Our new warehouse and office space is approximately 22,000 square feet; nearly four times larger than our previous site. This new facility will provide much-needed extra space to accommodate more stock, a growing product portfolio and an expanding team.

To enable a smooth transition, the move began over the December holiday period and should be completed by 18^th January 2021 when all teams will be operational from the new site.

Whilst the Boston postal address will change (a postal redirect will be in place for the next six months), the office contact numbers and email addresses will remain the same. Now outdated, our fax is being discontinued.

Director Bradley Calcutt comments, “We are incredibly excited about this new milestone for Boston which is the culmination of our strong and sustained business growth during recent years. Boston’s O3-NEX is a professional sanitising machine that generates ozone to kill viruses and bacteria. Numerous studies have long proven the efficacy of ozone as a natural biocide but up until now no controlled studies existed to prove its effectiveness against Sars-Cov-2 (Covid-19).

From Friday 16th October, electronic ‘keys’ for MOT connected equipment can be instantly generated from within the MOT Testing Service (MTS). Previously the request had to be emailed to the DVSA and it could take up to 14 days for the key to be received.

How to request a key

Simply log into the MTS and go to the Vehicle Testing Station Page. Under the heading ‘Change and connect equipment’, click on the link to ‘Request a key’.

Follow the instructions to create a key. The key is automatically generated and will be instantly emailed to you.

It is important to make sure that your MTS profile email address is up to date because this is where the key will be sent. The password to open the key is your user ID and the key will only work for the testing station from which it has been requested.

As the key is sent immediately, the DVSA say that you only need to request it when the engineer is on site. 

The latest DVSA bulletin also states that one key ‘only works on one piece of equipment’. While this is true for equipment from other manufacturers, it is not correct regarding Boston MOT Equipment. Thanks to our unique TestWatcher software only one DVSA key is required for all Boston MOT equipment connected using the same PC.

Who needs a key?

An electronic key is currently required to connect roller brake testers and decelerometers to the MTS when:

• opening a new MOT station
• reopening a closed MOT station
• making a change of ownership to an existing MOT station 
• replacing an existing brake tester or decelerometer
• adding an extra test lane (Except for decelerometers - the current requirement is one decelerometer per Vehicle Testing Station regardless of the number of MOT bays.)

When will additional equipment need to be connected?

Although the DVSA has not announced dates for the introduction of additional connected equipment, we are currently expecting to see connected emissions equipment (gas analysers & diesel smoke meters) introduced from around spring 2021.

The Boston O3-NEX is a professional sanitising system that generates Ozone; a natural gas that kills viruses and bacteria.

What is Ozone (O3)?

Ozone is a natural gas that is widely used in sanitary facilities due to its ability to oxidise and disrupt the molecular structure of viruses and bacteria. It is a natural disinfectant and its sanitising action can be applied to air, water, surfaces, and fabrics.

In addition to eliminating viruses and bacteria Ozone also removes moulds, fungi, dust mites, and is highly effective in banishing bad odours too.

How does it work?

Simply place the O3-NEX inside the vehicle cabin and plug into the 12VDC auxiliary power socket. All windows should be closed, the ventilation system set to recirculation and the fan speed on high. Once started, the machine’s built-in sensor analyses the environmental parameters and runs a fully automatic cycle with ozone saturation maintained for as long as necessary to eliminate pathogens.  

As soon as the cabin reaches the optimum saturation, the sensor automatically turns off the machine, notifies the user via a mobile or PC app, and offers a print-out of results that can be provided to customers. The vehicle should then be thoroughly ventilated before entering.

An optional 220V mains adapter is also available making the O3-NEX ideal for sanitising offices and other indoor areas such as hotel rooms, classrooms etc. that can be sealed off during the process.

Note: The O3-NEX must not be operated when people are present and all treated areas must be thoroughly ventilated before re-entering.

In response to the Coronavirus outbreak, the DVSA is allowing MOT stations that have changed ownership to continue testing even if they do not have the required connected equipment stipulated by the current regulations. 

Full statement from the DVSA

On 30^th March 2020, the DVSA issued a statement concerning MOT Connected Test Equipment via the MOT Testing Service (MTS) stating the following:

“If your Vehicle Testing station (VTS) changes ownership, you usually have a 3 month period to comply with the requirement to install connected test equipment.

DVSA is currently suspending this 3 month time scale. Any VTS that has not installed connected equipment within 3 months of a change in entity will still be able to test.

We encourage you to continue with your upgrade where possible.”

How long is this suspension likely to last?

The DVSA has issued no further information but this relaxation of the rules is likely to last for as long as the UK is in a period of lockdown.

We would expect that once businesses across the country get back to working normally, the 3 month rule would be reinstated. Whether MOT Stations are given another full 3 months to meet the regulations or only the remainder of time they had left to connect equipment is not currently known.

What does this mean for the rollout of additional Connected MOT Equipment?

The DVSA has previously stated that connected emissions equipment would be introduced in late spring 2020 and connected headlamp aligners would be introduced in summer 2020.

We believe that it is now unlikely that these timelines will be met.

Depending on how the Coronavirus situation develops, there is a chance that connected emissions equipment (diesel smoke meters and exhaust gas analysers) could still be introduced towards the end of 2020, but it is highly unlikely that a connected headlamp aim tester would be introduced this year.

The DVSA has not announced any change to the planned rollout schedule but we’ll keep you updated as soon as we hear anything official.

Thanks to our unique OSS (Online Support Service) built into Boston’s PC operated equipment (roller brake testers, emissions equipment and decelerometers) we’re able to access your equipment over the internet to diagnose and resolve problems remotely.

For any issues that cannot be resolved remotely, we will analyse these on a case by case basis and perform a risk assessment, including asking customers if they are exhibiting any signs of COVID-19, before a decision is made on whether to send an engineer to site. If an engineer is sent to site, social distancing and hygiene measures will be strictly enforced.

Equipment Calibrations

The DVSA has stated that if engineers are not available, MOT Stations can continue testing with equipment that is out of calibration provided that the equipment appears to be functioning correctly.

The equipment should then be calibrated as soon as engineers are available.

While Government guidelines permit, we will endeavour to carry out scheduled calibration visits by request. We will contact customers to check they are open. However, if you do not hear from our service department but would like calibration kept up to date please contact the office or your Boston local agent.

Initially introduced for roller brake testers on 1^st October 2019, the DVSA's new regulations require certain items of MOT equipment to connect directly to the government’s MOT Testing Service (MTS).

This means testers no longer need to note down results and enter them manually into the MTS.

The move towards connected test lanes is part of the DVSA’s initiative to decrease data-entry errors, help reduce fraud, and modernise MOT testing in garages. 

What’s the roadmap for 2020?

Following the initial introduction of connected brake testers, the DVSA have announced the following rollout plan for 2020:

• Decelerometer – Introduced 1st February 2020
• Diesel Smoke Meter - Late spring 2020
• Exhaust Gas Analyser - Late spring 2020
• Headlamp Aim Tester - Summer 2020

Since the government has yet to confirm headlamp aim tester specifications to manufacturers, we’re expecting the summer introduction date for this item to slip, possibly towards the end of the year. As soon as we hear more from the DVSA on this we’ll let you know.  

For emissions testing equipment, we have no current reason to believe that the introduction date will be delayed so businesses that may need new emissions equipment around this time should bear this in mind.  

Who do the new regulations apply to?

If you’re not making any changes to your MOT bay or Vehicle Testing Station you won’t need to do anything. As the new rules come into force for each item of equipment they will apply to anyone:

• Opening a new MOT station
• Reopening a closed MOT station
• Making a change of ownership to an existing MOT station 
• Replacing existing equipment
• Adding an extra test lane (Except for decelerometers - the current requirement is one decelerometer per Vehicle Testing Station regardless of the number of MOT bays.)

So for example, if you open a new MOT station in late spring 2020 after the introduction of connected emissions equipment, you’ll need a DVSA connected approved brake tester, exhaust gas analyser, diesel smoke meter, and decelerometer but you will not need a connected headlamp aim tester. 

How quickly does MOT equipment need to be connected?

According to current DVSA rules, equipment must be connected to the MTS at the time of installation, except in the case of a change of ownership.

For existing MOT stations making a change of ownership with a new Authorised Examiner (AE) appointed, the DVSA is granting a transition period of 3 months to connect equipment to the MTS.

For further information on connecting equipment to the MTS, there are two Special Notices that have been issued by the DVSA:

• MOT special notice 04-19: MOT connected equipment
• MOT special notice 01-20: connected decelerometers

Decelerometers are the latest items of MOT test equipment to come under new DVSA rules which require test results to be sent directly to the MOT Testing Service (MTS).

The rollout follows the regulations already introduced for connected roller brake testers in October 2019 and, as expected, not all MOT stations will require a new connectable model.

So, who do the new rules apply to?

The DVSA have confirmed that a connected approved decelerometer is a requirement for anyone:

• Opening a new MOT station
• Reopening a closed MOT station (regardless of how long it’s been closed)
• Making a change of ownership of a currently operating MOT centre (where it moves from one authorised examiner (AE) to another)
• Replacing an existing decelerometer

These rules apply to MOT classes 4, 5 and 7 only.

Who do the rules not apply to?

As further clarification, the DVSA stated that MOT stations do not need to buy a new decelerometer if:

• They’re only making a change to an existing AE (for example, where a new partner is added and the same AE number is kept).
• The application was received by DVSA before 1 February 2020 – any decelerometer that was approved at the point of application can be purchased.
• They’re only testing classes 1,2 and 3 – There is currently no obligation to have connected MOT equipment for motorcycle or three-wheeled vehicle testing.

How do you connect a decelerometer to the MTS?

An electronic ‘key’, also referred to as a software code, is required from the DVSA. AEs should request the code from the DVSA by email at least 14 days prior to the equipment being set up in order to ensure it's received in time.

In addition to the code, the device purchased must be connected approved with software from the manufacturer that supports the transfer of brake test results to the MTS. A full list of approved equipment can be found on the GEA’s website.

Boston’s DC-7500 is a connected approved, fully wireless portable brake tester that measures service and parking brake efficiency. Test results are automatically transferred to the control PC via Bluetooth once the device is within range, and data is then seamlessly uploaded to the MOT Testing Service.

For existing MOT stations making a change of ownership with a new or different Authorised Examiner (AE) being appointed there’s some good news from the DVSA.

The government body announced on 18th December 2019 that a 3-month transition period is granted to connect mandatory MOT equipment to the MOT Testing System (MTS).

Under previous rules Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS) undergoing a change of ownership needed to upgrade to a connected roller brake tester as soon as the change took place. If the equipment was not connected the VTS would not be authorised to carry out MOTs. 

However, the rules do not change if an MOT station is replacing an old brake tester or a new MOT station is being set up as summarised in the table below.

The DVSA confirmed that once the three months is up the brake tester will need to connect to the MTS or the site will have to stop testing.

The new rule has been implemented following feedback from MOT Stations and manufacturers including Boston who have highlighted the challenges posed by the previous regulations.

The email bulletin also reiterated the introduction of connected decelerometers from 1^st February 2020.

Boston Decelerometer Certified for use as Connected MOT Equipment

The Boston DC-7500 decelerometer was the first to be added to the DVSA’s Acceptable Equipment list as Connected approved. The updated list was published by the GEA on Monday 7^th October.

The approval means that Boston is now the first and currently only manufacturer able to offer DVSA Connected Equipment for brake testers, emissions testers and decelerometers.​

The new DC-7500 is a handheld wireless decelerometer which can be used to provide brake test results for all types of vehicles including motorbikes, cars and trucks.

A key advantage of the DC-7500 is that there is no need for any cables. All test data is saved and automatically transferred via Bluetooth to the Boston PC control station as soon as the device is within proximity. When used as MOT Connected Equipment, this data is then seamlessly uploaded to the MOT Testing System without any action required from the tester.

Quick and easy-to-use, the decelerometer also benefits from a large colour LCD display, rechargeable battery and long battery life with auto-sleep functionality built-in.

Connected Equipment regulations already apply to roller brake testers and the DVSA has announced that they intend to introduce the same regulations for emissions equipment, decelerometers and headlamp aim testers in early 2020.

Boston Exhaust Gas Analysers & Diesel Smoke Meters Certified as Connected MOT Equipment

In addition to its range of connected brake testers, Boston Garage Equipment is now the first manufacturer to receive Connected Equipment approval for its exhaust gas analysers and diesel smoke meters.

The DVSA is yet to confirm an introduction date for connected emissions, decelerometers or headlamp aim testers, but new regulations for connected brake testers were introduced from 1^st October this year.

Connected specifications enable equipment to connect and upload test results directly to the MOT Testing Service (MTS) removing the need for testers to enter data manually.

Crucially, for busy MOT stations, our solution monitors the internet connection and its connection to the MTS. Any errors are notified to the user and failed uploads are automatically reattempted in the background meaning information is never lost and tests don’t need to be repeated.

Furthermore, our connected decelerometer has been submitted to the DVSA for approval and we have an electronic headlamp tester currently under trial. With all items controlled using a single software program, there will be significant advantages for customers.

From 1st October 2019, MOT stations making a new site application or replacing an old brake tester need to buy connected test equipment.

As one of the biggest changes the industry has seen in a long time, this topic has understandably generated many questions. In order to respond to these, we’ve compiled a list of our answers to the ones most frequently asked. 

1. The current method works, so why change it? 

There are significant advantages of linking equipment to the MOT test system (MTS): less data entry errors, faster and simpler testing, and reduced fraud. Any new site applications being made now are unlikely to be approved before 1st October 2019. This means you need to ensure the brake tester you choose is a connected approved model. 

4. I’m buying a running MOT station with a working brake tester, do I need to buy a new connected model?

Yes. If there is any change of entity at an existing site a connected model needs to be installed. 

5. I’m replacing my brake tester with the exact same model, does it need to be connected?

Yes, if it’s being replaced after 1st October 2019. This applies even if the replacement is like-for-like. Be sure to check that the model you are considering is on the connected equipment approved list.

6. I just need to replace worn rollers, does this mean I need to buy and install a new connected brake tester?

No. If you are just replacing worn parts you do not need to purchase a new connected model.

7. Does connected equipment mean that a brake tester is now going to be significantly more expensive?

No. A connected brake tester from Boston is not going to be much more expensive than our previous models as the update is software-based. There will be a small increase to go towards some of the development costs, and an administrative activation fee as there is additional work to connect each machine but all costs will be kept to the bare minimum.

8. If the DVSA decides to make connected brake testers mandatory for all MOT stations does this mean I will need to replace my existing one?

There is currently no mention of the DVSA making connected brake testers compulsory for all MOT stations. If the DVSA does decide to implement this, it will depend on the model you have installed. See question 9 for compatible Boston models. 

Note: If you have an old, non-PC based brake tester, it is unlikely this can be upgraded.

9. I have a Boston brake tester and I’d like to save time on brake tests by not keying in results. Can I connect my existing model?

Yes. If you have a Boston D402, D412, D702 or D712 model controlled using our SW900 software these can be connected. This involves a software update (and possibly an upgraded PC), and an engineer will need to visit your site. It does not require any other hardware to be replaced. 

If you have a D402 or D702 running our early Manager Pro software (circa 2012 or before) these models can also be connected by changing the main control unit and upgrading to the new software.

10. What happens if I need to repeat a brake test, for example if the car is ejected prematurely from the rollers and it fails the test?

No problem, the tester can repeat the test as many times as necessary. The software will upload the result from every test but the MTS will only use the last result received. This logic will apply to all connected equipment. 

11. I need to buy a connected MOT brake tester, what should I be looking for?

The first thing is to make sure the model you are considering is on the connected equipment approved list. Secondly, you may want to consider how other items of connectable equipment that the DVSA are looking to introduce will be linked to the MTS. 

Boston connected equipment (brake tester, emissions equipment, electronic headlight tester and decelerometer) will all be linked using one piece of software and one control station. This means testers will benefit from faster, simpler testing, streamlined service and support, and no messy installation problems which could arise if combining different brands of equipment in one test lane.

In addition, our connected equipment will come with a free customer website where all test data and statistics can be easily seen. The site will also offer other useful MOT features for garage owners or authorised staff members. 

12. How is equipment connected to the MTS? 

This is a good question which requires answering in a little more detail.

To connect equipment to the MTS an electronic ‘key’ issued by the DVSA is required. This key authenticates the garage computer and connected equipment, and tells the MTS what data to expect. Depending on the equipment setup, one or more keys will be required:

VTS with multiple computer stations  

An individual electronic key is required for each computer station controlling connected equipment. If there are 2 PCs, then 2 keys will be required etc.

VTS with a single PC controlling connected equipment from different manufacturers

One computer station is used to operate two items of equipment, e.g. brake tester from supplier A and emissions tester from supplier B. In this instance, even though there is only a single computer station there are two separate pieces of software, so two keys, one for each, will still be required.

VTS with one PC and only Boston connected equipment

In this case only one key is needed as Boston’s single piece of software communicates with all our different items of connected equipment. 

This keeps things simple, avoids multiple computer stations on the workshop floor (saving space) and simplifies product support. Furthermore, as mentioned above in point 11, all data from our software, for all items of equipment, is uploaded to a free customer website where test details and statistics can be seen by the garage owner or any other authorised person.

13. When is the DVSA going to introduce more connected equipment? 

ARTICLE UPDATE: An email bulletin from the DVSA sent on 01/11/2019 communicated the following timeline for additional connected equipment:  

• Decelerometer – 1st February 2020
• Smoke Meters - late spring 2020
• Exhaust Analysers – late spring 2020
• Electronic Headlight Tester – summer 2020

New Rules Apply from 1st October 2019

Boston Garage Equipment leads the way with its range of Class 4 and Class 7 roller brake testers which have received official DVSA approval for use as MOT Connected Equipment.

On 8th August 2019, the Garage Equipment Association (GEA) published an updated 'DVSA Acceptable Equipment' list on its website for Roller Brake Testers.

The document confirms the introduction of the new requirements in 2019 and lists the makes and models of all compliant equipment. Currently Boston is one of only two manufacturers with brake testers that meet MOT Connected Equipment requirements. Furthermore, out of the 16 models approved, 10 of them are Boston products.

The information provided by the GEA also clarifies the circumstances in which the new specifications will apply:

"From the 1st October 2019 it will be mandatory for new site applications and when replacing existing brake testers to use equipment from this list [Connected]"

Brake Testers: The New ​Specifications

The new specifications mean equipment can be linked directly to the online MOT Test system (MTS) via a secure Application Programming Interface (API). This enables equipment to seamlessly transmit test results to the MTS without any action from the tester.

Boston’s solution goes one step further by also monitoring its connection to the MTS. Any errors are notified to the user and failed uploads are automatically reattempted in the background until successfully received.

New Standards for MOT Stations to be Introduced in October 2019

The DVSA has confirmed MOT Connected Equipment will be introduced from 1st October 2019.   

The new regulations which currently concern roller brake testers will apply to new MOT site applications and garages replacing their existing RBT models.

Over the last year the government department has been working with a small number of manufacturers, including Boston Garage Equipment, on a pilot scheme.

What is Connected MOT Equipment?

Connected MOT Equipment, sometimes described as Linked Test Lanes, refers to equipment that can be hooked-up directly to the DVSA’s cloud-based MOT Test System (MTS). 

This means that test results from items such as roller brake testers, smoke meters or gas analysers can be automatically transferred to the DVSA’s system without the need for manual data entry. 

Which MOT Test Equipment is in Scope?

The DVSA ultimately plans to link all digital equipment that records MOT test results to their own system. They have been working with manufacturers in a phased approach: 

• Roller Brake Testers (RBTs) - These were the first items to be trialled and we’re pleased to announce that Boston’s complete range of Class 4 & Class 7 brake testers are approved by the DVSA as MOT Connected Equipment.  
• Emissions Equipment – After RBTs, the pilot scheme was extended to exhaust gas analysers and smoke meters. ARTICLE UPDATE: As of 30/09/2019, Boston emissions equipment is connected approved by the DVSA.
• Headlight Testers – The pilot scheme has not yet been extended by the DVSA to headlamp aim equipment but as the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of MOT equipment, Boston is already working on a compatible product.
• Decelerometers – Once again we are already working on a compatible product. ARTICLE UPDATE: As of 07/10/2019, the Boston DC-7500 decelerometer is connected approved by the DVSA.

How Does Connected Equipment Work?

Connected MOT Test Equipment needs to communicate with the MOT Testing System (MTS). This means it must be capable of:

• receiving test and vehicle information from the MTS
• transmitting test results to the MTS System 

As specified by the DVSA, all data must be transferred in the form of a JSON file via a secure Application Programming Interface (API).

Boston’s solution to connecting our equipment with the MOT Test System is a background software program called TestWatcher.

After each official vehicle inspection, the test equipment software creates a test results data file in a target location monitored by TestWatcher. TestWatcher then picks up the file and uploads the data directly to the MTS.

TestWatcher also monitors the internet connection and its connection to the MTS. Any errors are notified to the user and failed uploads are automatically reattempted in the background meaning that information is never lost.

What Are The Benefits of Connected Test Lanes?

Connecting MOT equipment to the DVSA’s system will benefit Vehicle Testing Stations (VTSs) in a number of ways:

• Makes MOT Testing faster and simpler – The current system requires MOT Testers to record brake test, emissions, and headlamp aim results and then enter them manually into the MOT System, often on a separate computer. This is both time-consuming and a potential source of errors. With Connected Equipment the results will be transferred automatically with no need for any action from the tester.
• Reduces pass / fail errors – For linked MOT test equipment, the DVSA’s system will be able to make the pass/fail decision based on the data that has been received. This will remove any ambiguity the tester may face, reduce the chance of errors (and potentially a negative risk rating) and help the DVSA to combat MOT fraud which is beneficial to the industry as a whole. 
• Removes unnecessary paperwork – Once equipment is connected to the DVSA’s system, there could be no requirement for MOT Stations to keep the results print-outs from each test. Instead, all results could be stored online.
• Saves money on equipment updates – With linked MOT equipment, the DVSA could be able to update testing criteria automatically meaning garages could no longer need to pay for updates to this equipment. 
• Reduces MOT Fraud – Connected Equipment will make it harder for dishonest testers and MOT Stations to cheat the system. This will benefit not only the thousands of hard-working, honest businesses out there but also the general public the MOT system helps to keep safe.

When is Connected MOT Equipment Going to be Introduced?

Connected Equipment is a big change for the industry and one thing is clear, the DVSA is not going to make it compulsory for existing Vehicle Testing Stations, with equipment already in use, anytime soon. 

However, from 1st October 2019 MOT stations making a site application or replacing an old brake tester will have to purchase Connected Equipment. 

Following this there will be a phased approach for emissions equipment, beam setters and decelerometers. 

ARTICLE UPDATE: A DVSA email bulletin sent on 01/11/2019 confirmed the following timelines for the introduction of other items of connected equipment:

• Decelerometers - 1st February 2020
• Diesel Smoke Meters - Late spring 2020
• Exhaust Gas Analysers - Late spring 2020
• Headlamp Aligners - Summer 2020

At some point in the future the DVSA will need to make Connected Equipment compulsory for all testing stations but this is likely to be some way off.

What Does This Mean For Your MOT Station? 

If you’re considering setting up a new MOT Station you need to make sure the equipment you select is approved or will be soon be approved by the DVSA according to the new specifications.

In particular, you should be extremely wary of any standalone non-PC based test equipment as, should the regulations be extended to existing stations, it’s unlikely this equipment could be upgraded.

On Thursday 1st August members of the Boston team took to the golf course for the 2019 Garage Equipment Association (GEA) Golf Day.

The successful event raised over £1,000 for the automotive charity BEN - an independent charity that provides support for life for automotive people and their family dependents.

The GEA organised day was well-attended by its members who were all eager to put their golfing skills to the test and support this worthy cause.

Although the Boston team didn’t walk away with any prizes for their performance on the green, the day provided a great opportunity to catch up with industry colleagues.

In the evening members attended a dinner where Boston’s Sales Manager Ross Tabor donned his Presidential Chain of Office as GEA President. Ross presented the day’s golf awards and gave out the raffle prizes. He also presented the leaving gifts to Helen Kelly who is retiring from the GEA after 25 years and will be sorely missed.

These changes included a tougher stance on tailpipe emissions, the engine management warning light and the diesel particulate filter (DPF).

One year on, the impact of these more rigorous regulations has been analysed by Autocar magazine in their 15 May 2019 edition. 

The article includes commentary from Neil Barlow, Head of MOT policy at the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), and John Bull, Managing Director of Motest – a 21-strong network of vehicle testing stations that carries out around 85,000 MOT Tests each year.

To save you time, we’ve summarised the main findings of the Autocar report for you below.  

Impact on Diesel Car & Van Emissions Test Results

Emissions-related failures increased by 63% for diesel cars, and 116% for Light Commercial Vehicles (LGVs) between May 2018 and February 2019 compared to the same period the year before. 

Out of these failures, the largest single cause was the engine management warning light being on. More than 83,000 diesel vehicles failed for this reason which represents 32% of all diesel emissions-related failures during this time period.

Despite all the noise concerning DPF tampering, the DVSA recorded just 1,397 failures for this item representing a mere 0.5% of diesel emissions failures.

Impact on Petrol Car Emissions Test Results

In comparison to diesel vehicles, petrol vehicles didn’t see such a large rise in emissions-related failures during the same period – the increase was just 5.9%.

However, proportionally far more petrol cars failed their emissions test than diesel vehicles when compared to the year prior to the new testing rules – 5.5% compared to 2.2%.

Once again, the engine management warning light was a main cause with a staggering 257,601 failures representing a huge 43% of all petrol vehicle emissions-related failures. 

Appeals Against MOT Test Verdicts

Despite the changes to the MOT and the increase in emissions test failures, DVSA’s Neil Barlow pointed out that they haven’t seen an increase in motorists appealing against a failed test. 

Future DVSA plans for the MOT Test

In the article, John Bull – MD at Motest, stated that "the MOT test is not keeping up with changes in vehicle technology" echoing the thoughts of many in the industry.

In response, Neil Barlow explained that the DVSA plans to connect test stations to their central computers for real-time test results and added that they will be “trialling a data hook-up with a garage’s electronic brake tester’’ before the end of May 2019. 

Following this, they will connect with other Vehicle Testing Stations' emissions and headlamp beam setter equipment. In the future they also hope to extend this to other areas of a car such as warning lights and safety systems.

According to Neil, the goal is for the DVSA to be "an additional testing resource for garages who cannot afford the expensive equipment required to test some vehicle systems."

Neil also commented that it will help protect against fraud through better monitoring of the MOT system.

The statistics show that the changes to the emissions test are already helping to remove or clean up the most polluting vehicles on the road which can only be regarded as beneficial for our towns and cities.

Regarding the plans the DVSA has for the future, we strongly believe that any changes the DVSA makes to modernise the testing process will be beneficial for MOT stations.

The unscrupulous tactics have come to light following DVSA announcements that all Smoke Meters and Gas Analysers used for MOT Testing will need updated software on or before May 20th 2018. The new software brings into force Euro 6 compatible emission standards for Smoke Meters and the new 19th Edition Gas Analyser vehicle database.

Whilst it is true that some existing diesel Smoke Meter units may need to be replaced, the vast majority can be updated meaning that new equipment is not required. The Garage Equipment Association (GEA) is aware of this matter after receiving complaints and welcomes information from any affected businesses.

Following these reports, we would like to confirm that ALL Boston Garage Equipment units currently in use can be updated on-site and there is no need to purchase new equipment. 

MOT premises using other brands should check directly with their equipment manufacturer to establish whether their Diesel Smoke Meter is capable of being updated. 

Exhaust Gas Analysers simply require a vehicle database update. All Boston models can be updated and it is expected that this will be the case for other brands, but again it is advisable to check with the manufacturer if you’re unsure.

In view of the early deadline and the potential for increased demand, we recommend that MOT stations check their position without delay and place orders soon for a new Smoke Meter if indeed necessary.

Wheel Play detectors are an essential piece of equipment for MOT vehicle testing and car repair workshops. They are often integrated into 4 post lifts or can also be pit mounted. If you plan on reaping the benefits of one-man test lanes, then it’s essential to install a good quality play detector (and MOT lift). With so many models on the market to choose from, we’ve summarised the key questions to ask and the main features to look for before purchasing.

1. Should I choose a pneumatic or a hydraulic Play Detector?

The first thing you need to decide on is whether to choose a pneumatic or a hydraulic model. Both types perform equally well with standard vehicles, but when vehicles are slightly heavier than the norm, or loaded when presented for an MOT test, this is where having a high-quality unit pays. Hydraulics will always win over pneumatic and in our opinion, with vehicles becoming larger and heavier, it would be prudent to choose a hydraulic unit.

2. Does it meet UK force specifications?

UK specifications state that all play detectors, hydraulic or pneumatic, must apply at least 8kN of force on the moving plate in order to sufficiently move the road wheel of any vehicle presented for Class VL and Class VII testing (6kN for Class IV). However, not all models achieve this; some have been approved on their merits by demonstrating that the wheel is moved 'enough' to show play in key components meaning that play will be more difficult to detect on larger vehicles.

As play detectors are usually supplied as an integral part of a four post lift, be cautious when selecting a new vehicle lift and always ask whether the play detectors meet the actual UK force specification.  

3. Does it meet UK plate movement specifications?

UK specifications also state that play detectors should have “a lateral movement of at least 40mm in each direction from the central position, and a pivotal movement through a minimum arc of 8 degrees in each direction from the straight-ahead position”. As before, some equipment has been approved on its merits by demonstrating adequate movement of the wheel. However, in some circumstances, and where vehicles are larger, it may prove difficult to carry out a proper test on models that have less travel or smaller plates sizes than others.

4. At what speed does the equipment operate?

Play detectors should not operate fast and violently – this is simply unnecessary as any wear or play is easily seen through a steady and controlled movement of the plate. There have been instances where lift mounted play detectors operating too violently have affected the fixing bolts and even the integrity of the welded sections on some four post lifts, to the extent that they have been deemed dangerous or even condemned by insurance assessors!

The point here is that fast and furious is not necessary and can only serve to add extra stress to the vehicle lift. 

5. Should I buy a single or dual plate system?

There are several different types of play detectors on the market, some with single plate operation and other with dual plates. The specification calls for two types of movement, lateral and rotation. Units with two plates usually restrict one type of movement to each plate separately. This is logical and effective, but the same movements can also be achieved using a single plate with carefully thought through hydraulic cylinder positions and geometry. 

There are no major benefits to either type, but when it comes to vehicle inspection pits it is somewhat easier for the civil work to select a unit with a single plate. As vehicle lift play detectors are often built into the lift and share the same hydraulics, you are bound in this case by the type supplied by the manufacturer.

6. Is the equipment single-phase or three-phase?

The most common reasons for choosing a single-phase unit is to save on the cost of running an additional three-phase power supply to a specific area of the building, or because three-phase isn't available in the premises (common with rural garages). Lift integrated play detectors are governed by the power supplied to the lift – which is usually three-phase. Most suppliers will offer both power supply versions but the single-phase option is usually slightly more expensive. In terms of performance, both types will function equally well meaning that other than cost, there is no real benefit in choosing one over the other.

7. Is the handheld control torch up to the job?

The handheld control torch is the most used part of this product. Some controls use low cost plastic housings which are not impact resistant, making them prone to damage. Controls need to be durable and well made, and because the play detector is such a key item in the test lane, it must be operational at all times. Always consider the quality of the control unit and check the price and availability of spares or replacement components.

8. Is a wireless version of the control torch an option?

If so, there are big advantages here. A good quality wireless torch provides a much better user experience than hard-wired types. Due to the nature of the product, the torch is repeatedly lifted high and low, causing the cable to be twisted, tugged and stretched on virtually every MOT test.  If a wireless option is available, then it will certainly be worth the extra cost.

When considering wireless options, always check the operational usage time when fully charged; it’s common for testers to also use the torch to carry out inspection of other parts of the vehicle, so you want the control to have a good battery capacity. You should also ask about the cost of replacement parts in case a repair is needed - from some suppliers this can be very high.

9. Are replacement parts available for next day delivery?

As most play detectors are manufactured in Europe (or further abroad), this can result in long lead times on any necessary replacement parts. It’s important to check before you purchase that spare parts are available immediately if required. Handsets and remote controls are often dropped or driven over in the workplace and you need to be confident that you can get a replacement the next day.

10. What is the warranty period offered?

Play detectors are used on every test, day-in and day-out, and as such they are prone to wear and tear especially as they contain pumps and hydraulic rams. The warranty period offered by many suppliers is mostly limited to just 12 months but some manufacturers offer longer terms. Be sure to ask the question as many of these key components are expensive to replace.

Unlike platform lifts, two post lifts require correct and accurate vehicle positioning to ensure that the operator can work safely from beneath.

In this article, we cover the key points regarding the safe operation of two post lifts in particular.

Regular 2 Post Lift Inspection

All vehicle lifts must be installed properly by an experienced fully trained engineer. Once commissioned, operators should inspect the lift(s) on a daily basis before operation (Advisory BS 7980). Thereafter, a more thorough inspection should be carried out each and every month.

Daily inspection of a 2 post car lift should include the following:

• Checking for damage or lack of adjustment to chains or wire ropes
• Verifying that there are no leaks on the hydraulic equipment and hoses
• Inspecting the level of wear and tear to support pads and making sure the rubber surfaces are clean (wear, oil or grease on the lifting pads will reduce the friction between the vehicle and the rubber surface of the pad)
• Ensuring the correct operation of all arm locking mechanisms

Monthly inspection of 2 post vehicle lifts should include:

• Checking that all ropes, chains, rollers and carriage pins are lubricated
• Ensuring that all floor anchor bolts are sufficiently tightened
• Verifying that all of the screw and nut lubrication systems are topped up with the correct specified lubricant

In addition to regular inspections carried out by lift operators, all lifting equipment should also be thoroughly examined by a competent person every six months in accordance with LOLER regulations, and maintained every six-months in keeping with PUWER regulations.

Correct Vehicle Positioning with a Twin Column Lift

Correct positioning of a vehicle on a twin column lift is critical for safety; it is necessary to ensure that the vehicle is balanced correctly and its weight therefore evenly distributed. As the position varies depending on the type of car or van being lifted, the first thing a twin column lift operator must do is identify the vehicle’s centre of gravity. For most rear wheel drive vehicles, this is roughly situated around the front seats. For front wheel drive vehicles, the centre of gravity is usually slightly further forward.

The operator should extend or shorten the lifting arms on each of the carriages so that the vehicle can be lifted from the manufacturer’s designated lifting points (check the driver’s manual if necessary) – in some cases lifting adapters may be required and certain two post lift manufacturers offer a range of adjustable or vehicle specific adapters to enable correct vehicle lifting.

Arm Locking Mechanisms of Dual Post Lifts

This is another crucial safety area when operating dual post lifts. Lifting arms can be freely adjusted when they are less than 100mm from the ground, but once higher than this, they should automatically lock in place to prevent any sideways movement of the arms. To check that arms are correctly locked, you should lift the vehicle a small distance above the 100mm locking point and then apply some force to them. It is equally important to check that the pads are properly positioned before fully elevating the vehicle.

Checking and Maintaining the Balance Point

With the vehicle raised enough so that the weight is removed from the suspension, bounce the vehicle from the heaviest end (usually the engine end). Note how the vehicle is supported by the lift and ensure it is well balanced before continuing to lift further.

Once the vehicle is raised, it is vital to maintain the vehicle’s balance point. This can easily be overlooked when repairs are being made that call for large components to be removed thus shifting the vehicle’s centre of gravity and making it unsteady on the lift. According to the GEA, removing the transmission from a front wheel drive vehicle is the most common example of human error that causes vehicles to fall off.

Do Not Exceed the Car Lift’s Lifting Weight

Early type car lifts (of which many are still in use) were designed when vehicles weighed far less than they do today. It is important to always follow the lift manufacturer’s instructions regarding total load capacity and maximum weight limits, and to check whether the 2 post lift is suitable for the type and size of vehicle to be lifted. Lift regulations state that all lifts must have a SWL (Safe Working Load) sticker attached that is clearly visible to the operator at all times.

Brake Testers are an essential piece of equipment for MOT vehicle testing, and of course particularly for brake testing. They represent an important garage equipment investment for any workshop, so you want to be sure that you make the right choice before you buy. In this article we will be taking a look at what you should consider before purchasing the right equipment for your garage workshop.

DVSA Approval is a necessity

First of all in the UK, all MOT brake testing equipment must be DVSA approved. The DVSA produce a list of approved models of roller brake testers which is available to view on their website.

Warranty

Next, you should always check the manufacturer’s warranty policy. In the case of roller brake testers, it is especially important that you verify the warranty provided on the rollers. Although some may look good initially, they may have a poor quality surface coating and could thus require regular re-gritting, costing time and money. Furthermore, re-gritting rarely lasts very long and is not a substitute for good quality MOT Brake tester rollers. Some manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty on the rollers as standard; be wary of anyone offering less than a 3 year warranty.

Installation & Maintenance of your roller brake testing equipment

Nowadays, most brake testers are PC operated and quite technically involved to set-up. It is important that the equipment is installed, set-up and maintained by an experienced engineer who is fully trained and accredited by the manufacturer of the roller brake tester in question. This will also ensure that the engineer has the correct calibration equipment.

Most models are installed directly into a concrete recess; however some suppliers also offer the option of an installation cartridge. This has the benefit of increasing reliability (especially for models with weighing systems), making service and maintenance much easier.

Remote Control Brake Tester Operation

Remote control operation is a must and many manufacturers rely on cheap infra-red line of sight controls with limited range. Always look for a supplier that provides Radio Frequency (RF) Remote Controls with extended range so that you can perform a test reliably from within the vehicle without requiring a clear line of sight. Some manufacturers also offer tablet or smartphone remote controls using Wi-Fi.

In our experience, mobile or tablet operation simply isn’t practical in a workshop environment and these devices are much fiddlier to use during an MOT brake test than a simple handheld remote would be.

Motorcycle & Four Wheel Drive Brake Testing

With an increasing number of motorbikes on the road, motorcycle brake testing is becoming commonplace. Motorcycle brake tests can be carried out on both Class 4 and Class 7 roller beds provided there is a DVSA approved adapter plate and the software to test motorbikes is available. Always check with the manufacturer first.

Although most high end models include four wheel drive (4WD) brake testing, not all manufacturers offer this feature as standard so it is important to check this first too.

Brake Tester Support & Software

Should you ever require help in the form of technical support or remote assistance with your brake tester, it will make your life much easier if this is built-in to the software directly. This means you won’t need to exit or toggle through different screens and applications. Another point to consider, especially for new garages, is whether the manufacturer allows other equipment to be managed using the same software.

If your brake testing and emissions equipment are all operated using the same program, you’ll save time by not having to repeatedly enter vehicle and customer details into different software, probably at different computer stations.

These regulations apply to all lifting equipment provided for use or used by an employee at work. They therefore cover all types of vehicle lift and car lift including scissor lift, single post lift, 2 post car lifts and 4 post car lifts. The regulations also cover the use and safety of any mobile car lift, hydraulic lifts and all other forms of vehicle lift including both mobile and in-ground lifting installations.

What does the law require?

1. Car lifts (including lifting accessories) must undergo a regular thorough examination by a competent person.
2. All supplementary inspections and tests recommended by the competent person must be carried out within the stated timescale.

What is a thorough examination?

A thorough examination is a systematic and detailed examination of the lifting equipment by a competent person to detect any defects that are, or might become, dangerous.

Who is a ‘Competent Person’?

A competent person would usually be an employee of a vehicle lift supplier or specialist equipment maintenance company who should:

• have enough knowledge and experience of vehicle lifts to detect defects, wear or weaknesses, and assess how important they are in relation to the safety and continued use of the equipment.
• not be the same person who performs routine maintenance.  
• be sufficiently independent and impartial to make objective decisions.

How often must vehicle lifts be thoroughly examined? 

All lifts must be examined:

•  before first use and every 6 months thereafter (HSE803/69).
•  following ‘exceptional circumstances’, e.g. if a lift is damaged or fails, is out of use for long periods, or if there is a major change in how it is used which is likely to affect its integrity.

Are thorough examinations the same as routine maintenance?

No. Routine maintenance is intended to ensure the equipment continues to operate as intended, and risks associated with wear or deterioration are avoided.

Thorough examination may indicate areas of poor maintenance, but is not intended to replace it. You should not wait for the results of a thorough examination before carrying out maintenance on your lifting equipment. Maintenance is a requirement under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and applies to all work equipment including vehicle lifts.

Do I need to keep records?  

Yes, you must keep records of all thorough inspections for all of your vehicle lifting equipment.

What happens if defects are found?

• If a defect is found which is or could become a danger to people, the competent person will tell you immediately and confirm this in their report.
• If the competent person discovers a defect that involves an existing or imminent risk of serious personal injury, they must tell you immediately and send a copy of the report to the relevant enforcing authority (HSE or the local authority), even if the defects are remedied immediately.
• You must take action to rectify any defect you are told about. If you are notified of a serious and significant defect, you must immediately take the lift out of service until the defect has been put right. If you do not, you will be breaking the law.
• For defects that need to be rectified within a certain timescale, you must repair or replace the defective equipment within the specified time, and not use it unless the defect has been satisfactorily put right.

What happens if you are non-compliant?  

If you do not have current Vehicle Lift Thorough Examination Certificates for each lift then you are breaking the law and exposed to serious consequences, particularly if an accident occurs.

Who to contact for a thorough examination?

All major lift suppliers provide periodic inspections meeting Lift Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. Some suppliers, including Boston Garage Equipment will work on most brands of vehicle lifts and stock parts, accessories, cables etc.

Since the DVSA switched over to its new on-line web based MOT system, testing stations are no longer able to enter equipment serial numbers and calibration dates. This useful tracking function and the automated calibration reminders were therefore lost.

Responsibility to record calibration due dates for MOT test equipment now falls upon the Authorised Examiner and garages run the risk of penalty points or more serious disciplinary action if calibrations are not kept up to date.

Boston is pleased to announce the launch of its two new pit mounted commercial play detectors – PD314 and PD318.

Suitable for pretesting (Class 5 MoT approval coming soon), the PD314 has four directional plate movements and the PD318 has eight directional plate movements. We look at the many reasons to spend a little more on your new or upgraded MoT bay and enjoy the extra Class 7 profits. 

By far the majority, currently 4 out of 5 MoT premises, can only test Class 4 vehicles. Looking at the MoT market, it seems that it’s short-sighted and less profitable to save the modest extra cost which can establish you as the local class 7 testing station.

Firstly, almost 50% of Class 7 vehicles fail MoT tests, and mileages average 106,000 which is a massive 52% higher than Class 4.

Testing Class 7 therefore clearly provides more repair work, which generally has better margins, and is more extensive on light commercials. With only 20% of MoT stations offering Class 7 test, there’s no shortage of customers and no need to discount. The Class 7 testing arena is indeed a buoyant and profitable sector of the vehicle repairs industry.

Furthermore, van sales and in particular LWB models are selling in record numbers as the recession recedes. That ensures continuing good business for Class 7 stations, which can also test Class 5L vehicles needing test certificates from year one. The Motor Industry organisations are lobbying for Class 7 tests to begin from year one, and should this become a reality then demand would immediately increase substantially further.

Many Class 4 test lanes can be upgraded, but in considering upgrading from Class 4, you should note that Class 7 testing compliance requires more space to accommodate the test lane and increased headroom over the entire area. Vehicles entrances also need to be higher and wider.

If you are considering a new Class 7 bay then contact major suppliers who will normally visit your premises, advise you fully on the optimum bay layout, costs etc. and will prepare drawings for DVSA approval, which is usually a free service.

We asked for the views of Ray Calcutt, MD at Boston Garage Equipment that specialises in MoT bay installations. Ray has been an MoT Authorised Examiner for 43 years and has considerable knowledge on MoT bay operations. He commented “The facts on Class 7 testing benefits speak for themselves; for a new installation, going Class 7 is the obvious choice provided the space and height requirements can be met. Plenty of good, quick and free advice is available from most suppliers and at Boston we don’t mind or criticize competition. That being said it is absolutely paramount that you buy a good European lift and braketester. He explained “Over the past ten years, there has been a growing ingress of Chinese MoT equipment entering the UK market and some big name brands are opting for larger margins from inferior vehicle lifts in particular. There is also a trend to import Chinese steel fabricated parts for assembly in Europe and tagged ‘made in Europe’. It is really expensive in the long run, to trust poor quality equipment. Always ask where equipment is manufactured and assembled and get it in writing. Then you will have a sound Class 7 bay that will be future-proof and profitable in the foreseeable UK MoT test market.”

The GEA provides a full list of authorised equipment suppliers, and it is big practical advantage to buy your complete bay from one company. This enables various items to be controlled and data displayed from a single base which are normally designed to manage optional equipment such as slide slip meters and suspension tester. It also greatly simplifies calibrations and general support for the whole test bay.

All Boston’s four post lifts are low-voltage pre-wired throughout to give a choice of operating from any post. To change using one post to any other is a single plug-in and go procedure taking just seconds! This very convenient option saves time and money, avoiding the need to keep returning to any one corner of the lift every time to control lift movements. By comparison, ordinary lifts now seems outdated.

Introduced last year, APC has proved popular with garages that want the most-up-to-date equipment, which is a growing sector of the garage equipment market. The APC option can be added at any time to the current range of Boston lifts, and is currently being offered free of charge on all ATL models ordered before 31st December 2014.

The launch took place at FST’s main office in Woolwich which is also home to their flagship MOT and service repair centre. 

Keynote speaker, Sarah Sillars, OBE FIMI Executive Chair of the IMI, spoke about the benefits of having apprentices in the work place and her enthusiasm for the new FST programme.

We spoke to Boston’s managing director Ray Calcutt who confirmed that their warehouse was working over at least three weekends to meet urgent demands from flood-stricken MoT operators. Ray commented “we have already had many insurance replacements ordered from premises where water up to 5ft deep has ruined everything is some really good workshops, which have never experienced anything to match the November floods. We have 14 braketester beds and 8 complete new bays being despatched over the next two weeks, stretching our workforce and installation engineers to a seven day week.” He continued 

“Thankfully we hold a very large stock of Class 4 and 7 MoT equipment so logistically we are coping, but we anticipate many more replacement items being needed as insurance claims are processed.”

All major equipment suppliers are facing a surge in demand to recover from the exceptional rainfall throughout many parts of the UK which were still causing flooding in North Wales as we go to press.

FST provides support for people excluded from work because of a mental health condition or other disadvantages to improve their employability. Carolyn Morgan is FST’s first apprentice in the new Woolwich garage and was presented with her first professional mechanic’s toolkit by local MP Nick Raynsford. FST is particularly proud of this achievement as women are underrepresented in this area of employment.

Boston area sales manager Ross Tabor received the enquiry by phone and next day was on-site measuring and preparing plans for VOSA approval. Within 4 days all equipment for the new bay was delivered, and two days later, installation commenced. Then within one week the bay was fully installed, calibrated and training completed. Two days after that, the ATL bay was signed off by VOSA!

Abdul Haseeb of Blackwater Motor Co. could hardly believe the cooperation and efficiency of Boston staff in what he called ‘his hour of need’. Abdul had pre-arranged a Grand Opening with press coverage before he was badly let down, and Boston saved the day with their 2 week start-to-finish performance.

Just one year ago, this new facility created such demand for Motor Vehicle courses that plans are already in hand for a major expansion at the Barking College.

A Governor of the College Management, Steve Thompson heaped praise on Boston in outlining the opportunities given to students, and confirmed that the new academic year enrolments could not cope with the keen interest in Motor Vehicle qualification training. Mr Thompson commented “Without Boston’s generous gift of a complete ARL automated testing bay, we would have been very restricted in the provision of hands-on-training. ATS are the world leaders in Personal Rapid Transport technology, and Heathrow’s owners BAA have taken a substantial shareholding in ATS, entering into a framework agreement to make ATS their PRT supplier worldwide. ATS are presently in negotiations with customers for PRT systems in UK, USA and the middle east.

The Boston testing facility will be equipped to carry out functional checks on vehicles after maintenance before releasing them back to the network and will enable fault analysis of defective vehicles. Vehicles will also be checked following production and the test equipment may also be used for vehicle development. Engineers from ATS and Boston have worked closely to meet demanding criteria for safe, efficient and reliable vehicle testing.

The centre faces high demand for Motor Vehicle courses and to enable an expansion to their training facilities, Boston stepped in with an offer to donate a state of the art test facility complete with recessed 4 tonne lift which the College has described as ‘generous in the extreme.’

Boston is still offering next-day despatch and sees no problem in fulfilling the current heavy demand in time for the new legislation. Boston confirm that with emission equipment being a year round fast moving product, stocks are always good and will satisfactorily meet all order requirements in time.

Managing Director Ray Calcutt commented on the company’s healthy position which has been sustained in a difficult climate “2008 has seen heavy demand for Boston ATL and OPT lanes which we relate to the popularity of our play detectors that have unique features. Added to this is of course has been the demand for new specification smokemeters which are now mandatory for MoT tests. Our range has been expanded and there are innovative new products scheduled for the coming months. The euro exchange rate has been unhelpful but this is affecting all major suppliers although our UK production has in fact gained from this. We expect our natural growth to overcome the effects of recession, and the vehicle maintenance and repairs industry should hold its own with new car sales in decline, and the need to service older stock”

All of these current developments are stimulating sales which at Boston are running at record levels, where at any one time we have over 40 ATL and OPT bays in progress. The market is not responding to cut-price products as some suppliers expected. There are a number of Chinese vehicle lifts on offer but build quality, controls, spare parts and support are factors working against these products. Most buyers are aware that for the cost of two days downtime on a lift repair they could have paid a little extra for an established vehicle lift with a robust pedigree. This attitude prevails on all MoT equipment where testing stations literally come to a costly standstill if any one item of test equipment is not operating reliably and accurately. 
We expend a considerable budget on development at Boston and all equipment is made to our own demanding specifications. We constantly have equipment in prototype and pre-production test stages with exciting new features to be launched later this year to enhance the simplicity, speed and safety of reliable MoT testing.

Boston's parent company has operated MoT stations for 35 years and has been supplying equipment for 20 years, some which we manufacture in the UK. We spoke to Ray Calcutt, Managing Director of Boston who commented “the industry imports almost everything and the pound is at a record low. It’s likely that some suppliers have changed prices from January because costs have continued to increase since last summer. However at Boston, we are not increasing any product prices at least until April, and then we’ll review the situation. We produce some equipment in the UK, but manufacturing sector prices here are now rising at the fastest rate for seventeen years.”

Italy, Holland and Germany are the largest manufacturing sources for the UK garage industry, with smaller imports from USA, China, France and Scandinavia. In addition to manufacturing costs, most shipping and haulage charges are priced in euros and dollars, putting further pressure on distributor margins.

Garages planning to install equipment this year, may be well advised to buy sooner rather than later as the forecast for sterling is for continued falls and this will make further price rises unavoidable.

Funded by Hertfordshire County Council, the new workshop continues a project originally started as a charity in 1994 by John Page, a former head teacher. At the opening event, Mr Page said “This is the perfect thing for hard-to-teach children. You can stimulate them and deliver most aspects of the national curriculum in an unorthodox way. You’re turning kids around, keeping kids out of offending and persuading them not to go over that edge. It is such an enormously valuable facility for local people.”

Crime reduction officer for Watford, Kim Boot, also visited the opening and praised the work that was being done. He said: “Anything with youth engagement and anything as positive as this is extremely worthwhile.” Many of the school’s former pupils have moved on to successful careers with companies including Suzuki and Honda.

Mick Rowan, Project Manager, said: “In the first term we had a 95 per cent attendance rate, which for children who haven’t been at school for a couple of years is phenomenal, just unheard of. I’m over the moon with that.”

Visits to Boston headquarters are scheduled for regional Kenyan senior police, as other main cities such as Mombasa progress their plans to regulate vehicle emission levels.

Diagnostics was another Boston success at the Coventry exhibition, with particular interest from all sectors of the automotive industry in the wireless tablet PC and stand-alone station options with instant update capability via Internet. Many visitors showed keen interest in Boston's capability which is unique in Europe, to control emissions equipment and ATL braketesters from their diagnostics PCs. The policy of no further cost obligation or lock-outs was an added plus.

Also attracting attention was the recently launched ST-6000. Produced in Italy by leading diagnostics manufacturers Brain-Bee, with over ten thousand units in use throughout Europe and Ireland. The ST-6000 is now available in the UK exclusively from Boston. A low-cost dedicated hard-wired comprehensive scantool with a proven pedigree.

To meet Suzuki's high standards for efficient and reliable vehicle workshops, Boston Garage Equipment was chosen to supply five vehicle lifts, brake test equipment for cars and motorcycles, and computerised emissions. During the equipment review process, the dealership principal Keith Stoner inspected Boston's demonstration premises and had no hesitation in selecting the cutting edge technology and colour coordinated packages for which Boston are renowned.

Anticipating strong demand for lower cost play detectors, Boston is introducing their impressive pneumatic model PD-302 which was VOSA approved last year for Class 4 and 7 lift and pit installations.

The PD-302 will provide a choice from Boston who have previously sold only their hydraulic model PD-301 which is claimed to offer more features than any play detector in Europe. The new pneumatic model performs the basic MoT needs but as expected from Boston, the design is unique and innovative. Powered by patented fluidic muscles which can develop ten times the initial force of conventional cylinders of the same diameter, the advantages are considerable. Instead of typically over 30 parts on an air cylinder, Boston's unit has no pistons, no rods, no packing or seals, no gaskets or rings, no needles or magnets. No friction, no wear, no maintenance and just one moving part. This design concept is exclusively available from Boston.

Managing Director Ray Calcutt explained "our hydraulic unit is excellent value with 200bar power and numerous functions, but we now have to address an expected surge in demand for a lower priced basic model. As with all pneumatic play detectors, there is less force than hydraulics, however both models perform really well so there is now a choice from Boston. Both models are VOSA approved and can be retrofitted to all Boston 4-Post lifts".

Many visitors showed keen interest in Boston's capability which is unique in Europe, to control emissions equipment and ATL braketesters from their diagnostics PCs. 
The policy of no further cost obligation or lock-outs was an added plus. Among those expressing serious interests were at least two national automotive groups.

The long-awaited Boston UK launch follows the success of these packages in mainland Europe over the past three years with France, Germany and Italy all reporting record sales.

Workshops already using Boston emissions, recent braketesters or air-con will enjoy substantial savings due to diagnostics compatibility with their existing control platform.

The basic package includes all European connections and 12 month updates, and there is no lockout or further cost obligation. Boston's optional Asiabag is available covering all main Asian vehicles.

The EOBD-300 is connected to Boston's RMP and TEMPERATURE connectors at the base and is powered by the EOBD plug. The internal software automatically selects the same protocol as installed in the vehicle (J1850) and displays the correct RPM and TEMPERATURE on the LED display.

The EOBD-300 is the first tool of its kind in the UK market. It has the ability to determine the RPM from three different locations, the magnetic vibration sensor, the charge cycle at the battery and now also from the EOBD socket, there are no inaccuracies - the EOBD-300 is correct every time.

The entire system is wireless and enables RF transmission direct to either Boston's smoke meter or Gas Analyser.

Typical of the effect of the new regulations, Boston Garage Equipment's production line in Essex is now working seven days to meet a surge in orders for their hydraulic PD-301 play-detector that is claimed to offer the most extensive range of features available in Europe. Additionally to meet demand, Boston have installed a customer test bay at their headquarters where the PD-301 is available for anyone to use if they are considering one-man tests.

Meanwhile we have opened our customer test bay in Essex, available 6 days a week for seeing and using our ATL equipment entirely without obligation. This provides every opportunity to evaluate our play-detector, computerised braketesters and emissions control platform in operation, maintaining the level of customer service for which Boston is recognised".

This new play-detector is already in heavy demand as MoT stations look forward to the benefits of one-man testing.

A further unique feature is Boston's diagnostics option for cars and commercials which interfaces with the AC7000, separately available for Asian and European vehicles.

Air Conditiong and diagnostics data is displayed on a vivid LCD screen, with membrane alphanumeric keyboard and graphic printer. Sized for cars, commercials and HGV, the AC7000 has a very comprehensive specification.

Additionally many existing bays will upgrade, particularly those handling 20 or more tests per week. "If a testing station can save using an assistant for just two hours a day and employ that person on servicing and repairs charged at say £40/hr, then there's £400 extra each week right there" says UK Sales Manager Mr John Powell. "Plus of course extra profit on parts.

It really is an exceptional opportunity for MoT stations although the cost of upgrading will depend on existing equipment to some extent. For example, some lifts may need changing, but premises using pits obviously will save here, and some RBT's cannot be upgraded".

VOSA have published the final equipment specification and manufacturers are putting final touches to their designs and engineering. The approval process is under way and the list of acceptable equipment should be available on schedule.

With a wapping 300% increase in turnover, there is no doubt this is the result of our emphasis on new technology products – the way Boston has always perceived as the way forward for modern progressive workshops.

With the addition of extra staff and the introduction of the commercial and diagnostics sections, Boston remains confident to substantially increase turnover further this year with also the possible addition of international distribution.

1. It enables a more secure access to the calibration procedure to ensure and maintain the quality of service the customer receives from our trained engineers.

2. It also includes new PC compatibility to our emission equipment and our braketesters can link them together so that all results can be sent wirelessly using Bluetooth to the PC for printing and saving.

3. The PC is also able to control the braketester if the operator wishes using the keyboard, but the most important change is the ability to introduce the new 'One Man Test' ATL software onto the OC so that the braketester responds to the required auto-prompts!

In the update software is also included the new Boston Side-Slip Meter program. This enables the new BSS2000 to be quickly installed and provides the operator with simple toe-in and toe-out information. A relatively inexpensive addition to any of our braketester customers with big earning potential, especially for those that trade in wheel alignment and tyre replacement.

It's not everyday that you get something for nothing, but we're hoping to encourage our existing customers to buy into the new ATL when available at little cost in comparison to other makes and models around (which are without our features & benefits!).

It connects simply and efficiently to either the D400 or D700 Roller Braketesters with results shown immediately and automatically on the display console. Furthermore, if the customer is using Bluetooth connectivity to our emissions PC, then results are also shown on the screen and can be saved/printed at any time.

This is a particularly handy addition for tyre shops and wheel alignment specialists an initial indication of alignment problems. The new BSS2000 will be available from May 15th.

"There is a lot of testing, evaluating and software customisation that we are working on which is very time consuming and we have been holding back until now so that everything is absolutely correct" – says UK Sales Manager Mr John Powell.

Indeed, we are aiming at three different market versions all running the same basic platform and vehicle database but in different formats.

Boston will launch the PC version first with special deals available to its existing customer database with emissions equipment. After that, there will be smaller handheld version for the smaller non-MoT customer who is looking for a robust cost effective tool with excellent coverage and technical support.

The flagship model will be the wireless Bluetooth version running on a high spec rugged tablet PC enabling complete flexibility and mobility for all working conditions.

So Boston this month set plans to develop a commercial selection to provide vehicle lifts, brake testing, emission testing and diagnostics to its customers and distributors. The first of our commercial line products will be the BDL7500 - a 7.5 Tonne Hydraulic commercial column lift sold in sets of two, four or six.

With the ability to add wheel reducers, operate from any post and attach long 10m platforms, we expect this to be a big seller for Boston in the commercial market. The BDL7500 will be available form the 1st June with our new D500 and D550 commercial braketesters to follow later on in the year.

The brake tester will fit into the existing family of display consoles as the R100, D400 and D700 and of course will have wireless Bluetooth capability. Commercial diagnostics is planned for early 2006.

There was considerable interest with demonstrations including a typical auto-prompt ATL programme running continuously throughout the three day show. An impressive Boston stand played host to hundreds of MoT and workshop specialists showing particular interest in the full Automated Test Lane on show, which employs the most advanced MoT bay technology.

The timing of this display was especially relevant, in anticipation of the One Man MoT test which will soon be possible using the PC braketester and play detector incorporated in the ATL.

Also attracting attention was Boston's new Air-Con recharge station and commercial mobile column lift, together with a new suspension tester and sideslip meter to be released later in the year.
