How old is too old for MOT equipment?

Everything You Need for an MOT Bay

Should you upgrade, repair or replace your MOT equipment?

At what point does ageing equipment become a problem? It's a question every MOT station faces eventually.

Many MOT stations are still operating equipment that's been in service for well over a decade. With the right maintenance, support and upgrades, existing equipment can continue to deliver reliable performance for many years to come.

The real question isn't:

"How old is it?"

It's:

"Is it still meeting the needs of my business?"

Signs it may be time to upgrade

Sometimes the equipment itself is still mechanically sound, but the technology around it has moved on.

You may benefit from an upgrade if:

✔    You're running outdated software or operating systems
✔    You want to move to connected equipment
✔    Workflow feels slower than it should
✔    Future DVSA requirements may require newer functionality

Often, upgrading existing equipment can deliver many of the benefits of replacing items without the associated cost or downtime.

Signs it may be time to replace equipment

Replacement becomes the better option when:

✔    Repairs are becoming increasingly frequent and/or costly
✔    Critical parts are no longer available
✔    Downtime is affecting productivity
✔    Upgrading is no longer commercially viable

At this stage, replacement equipment may offer better long-term value and reliability.

Our Approach

At Boston, we've always believed that customers shouldn't have to replace perfectly good equipment simply because technology or regulations have changed.

That's why many of our systems are designed with future upgrades in mind.

Whether it's emissions equipment, brake testers or MOT Control Software, our first step is always to assess whether your existing equipment can be upgraded before recommending replacement.

For example, Boston combined emissions packages and roller brake testers installed as far back as 2005 can still be upgraded to meet the latest Connected MOT Equipment requirements - often at a fraction of the cost of a complete replacement.

This approach helps customers extend the life of their equipment, reduce investment costs and minimise disruption to their MOT operation.
